Post-tensioning is a method in which high-strength steel cables—used to reinforce concrete against tensile forces—are tensioned after the concrete has been poured. This method, which is preferred in multi-story buildings, beams with large spans, and cantilevered structural elements, offers the following advantages:
- It provides significantly greater architectural functionality and a sense of spaciousness, as wide spans can be spanned without supports.
- In the construction of post-tensioned slabs and beams, the resulting reduction in thickness leads to a decrease in the building’s total weight, which directly reduces the seismic loads on the building and enables the construction of more earthquake-resistant structures.
- It generates economic savings by shortening the construction time of buildings.
- Cracks in reinforced concrete elements are minimized and become controllable.
